I enjoy keeping my first kitchen garden lately. I’m glad we don’t have wild boars in our region, but there are many of them that eat vegetables in fields in countryside of Japan. I visited a friend since our teens who lives in such area to follow her hunting team last November. I felt I learned how the lives of the animals and humans are connected together not from books, but through an actual experience, for the first time. I came to take the connection as my subject matter again, with far more vivid sense than the last time, when I had the solo show named “Troposphere”. I am very excited to make my ideas alive!

🌺Art Basel Hong Kong 2024!🌼
Two of my works are going to join this year’s Art Basel Hong Kong from @mizumaartgallery booth. I hope you will enjoy!
The canvases show mouse deer and dholes, the animals live mainly in Southeast Asia, India and China, used to be kept in Ueno Zoo in Tokyo . Even though both of them are enlisted as endangered species and their preservation conditions are worse than giant panda, they are almost unknown in Japan. However, the tropical rainforests they inhabit are deeply related with Japanese economic activity, such as pulp plantations and dam constructions.

How was your year of the Rabbit so far?
Most elementary school students experience woodcut in Japan, however there are not so many who try to make it after they have grown up. I made this woodcuts after our inkjet printer stopped working, even though it was the end of the year when I had to print new year’s cards. I was so troubled to find proper boards, paint and paper that I cycled to a couple of art material stores, a DIY store, 100 yen stores and a library over and over😅
After trying woodcutting by myself, I came to interested in its history, especially how it has related to social activism as I saw in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
